HME “INSIGHTS” Chapter 1

“INSIGHTS” Chapter 1 – Has education evolved since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic?

This is the first in a series of posts following our discussions as a company with the DIT who have involved us in their ‘Ed Tech’ campaign. We were faced with a number of very pertinent questions for us to reflect not only on the state of Design & Technology Education but also our global position as innovators, imagineers and suppliers into the market…

Since the onset of the Pandemic the UK and the world in general, the world has seen a large demand for innovative ideas and solutions from improvisation of hospital equipment to PPE.  This has required Innovators to call upon their design & technology and engineering skills to understand and harness new thinking.  Indeed one such innovator was a D&T teacher Mr.Huw Gullett of Sedgefield Community College who responded to the challenges of Covid-19 during the first Lockdown. Huw jumped in by using some of our equipment to design and manufacture PPE face shields to assist the shortage using his skills to be both reactive and responsive.

The pandemic climate has created an insatiable demand to bring core Design & Technology curriculum back into the main core curriculum subjects within our education system, to create and nurture our next generation of innovators for years to come.  At HME we are looking to strengthen our position as a Design & Technology specialist, developing a self-strategy by gathering the information from schools and being proactive in promoting a national skills base.  The COVID pandemic besides having devastating consequences in our communities, has also presented a technological challenge to us all, which although not insurmountable, should bring the various Governing bodies, workplaces and educational establishments together, to create a task force that will provide a long-lasting skill legacy for young people…We can only hope and work towards a brighter future. Stronger together as the UK is the worlds leader in STEM Education.

This is our entry on the campaign website…”Based in the heart of the UK, HME is a market leader in quality design technology and science equipment in schools in the UK and throughout the Middle East. Over many years, the company has developed a global reputation for commitment and dedication, supporting future generations by ensuring design thinking remains a key part of education.

HME began as and remains a specialist producer of hot metal equipment from where the name HME was derived. However, more recently, HME has developed its equipment portfolio to meet the demanding needs of advancing technology. In addition to supplying laser cutters, 3D printers and CNC machines, the company also designs and installs innovative S.T.E.A.M. labs, including aviation simulators and “Maker Space” labs that use artificial intelligence and robotics to bring to life the subject matter. HME has completed several projects in renowned schools across the UAE and Gulf region. Every lab is specifically designed to meet the exacting and bespoke requirements for each educational establishment and HME provides a ‘one-stop’ comprehensive service from design concept, supply, to installation, including commissioning and training. Its products are built to a high quality, safe and suitable for educational purposes, fully complying with current British Safety Regulations.”
